Grazing & Big Game Ranch
Upper French Creek cattle and equestrian ranch is located along the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains in the French Creek Valley just a short drive northwest of Buffalo, WY. Access is by paved highway to the gate. At approximately 2,605± total acres, 1,647± deeded, and ranging in elevations that climb from 5,000 feet up to 6,780 feet at its highest point on North Ridge, this spectacular ranch offers beautiful and varying views of the Bighorn Mountains, French Creek and the surrounding valley from everywhere on the property.
Upper French Creek Ranch is primarily used for livestock grazing and the current owners operate it as a ranch. As such, it is capable of running approximately 50-60 pairs; perfect for someone who wants to have a small cattle operation. It could serve as a nice base for a small purebred cattle operation, or a great place to raise and ride horses. The irrigated meadows provide a nice compliment to the native grasslands, providing a balance of forage and flexibility for a grazing program. The ranch has a State of Wyoming grazing lease on 640 acres and also has a 57-AUM BLM lease for livestock grazing.
The ranch has a home that could easily serve as a manager’s residence, which is near the barn, shop, corrals and working facilities. There is also a 5-acre building site still available for a future buyer to build a new home to enjoy the wonderful valley and views. In addition to the 5-acre vacant building site within the conservancy easement, there are 490± acres with no easement where you can also build whatever you want. Both options offer amazing building sites with great Wyoming mountain views. With a Nature Conservancy Easement to protect the natural plants, wildlife, and scenic view sheds, from further development this ranch will remain largely as it is today. Though currently operated for agriculture use, the recreational amenities of the ranch are not to be overlooked, nor is the chance to unwind, relax and enjoy life far from the stress of urban living. Whether you want to retire, or just a place to escape permanently or periodically, you’ll immediately enjoy the Wyoming way of life here.
Significant ecological diversity and plenty of open-space provides natural habitat for pronghorn antelope, mule deer, white tail and elk; not to mention Hungarian Partridge, some Sharp Tail Grouse and other upland birds and water fowl. French Creek meanders through the cottonwood lined riparian zone for roughly 1.5 miles.
Not often do foothill ranches in the greater Buffalo area come on the market that are this close to town, with the ease of access, productivity and recreational amenities like Upper French Creek Ranch. Please call if you’d like for more information or if you’d like to schedule a showing of this fine property.

The historic western town of Buffalo is scenic and quaint at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains. It has all the essential services one might need, such as a modern hospital and clinic, physical therapy, grocery stores, a fantastic sporting goods store, The Sports Lure, banks, AG supply stores, a movie theatre, fine dining, Summer night rodeos, golf, and an excellent K-12 school system. Buffalo also has Johnson County Airport, which is capable of handling small jets. The Bighorn National Forest is only 15 minutes away.
The charming community of Sheridan, WY has most amenities and conveniences, including an FBO and a commercial airport with United Airlines jet service to Denver, as well as world-class golf, dining, medical facilities, first-rate schools (rated among the best in the nation) and shopping in Sheridan’s historic downtown. Furthermore, and more distinctly, Sheridan is home to the annual WYO Rodeo, world-class polo, Brinton Museum, Don King Days and many other uniquely “Sheridan lifestyle” events that are sure to please everyone. For further shopping and air service, one can find it in Billings, or Casper, each about two hours away. Furthermore, the Big Horn Mountains are only 30 minutes to the west, where you’ll find all the outdoor recreation you can imagine. World class fly fishing is all around the area from the North Platt River near Casper to the Bighorn River of Montana, and everything in between.
Gillette, Wyoming, east of the Ranch on Interstate 90 has commercial air service with connecting flights to several major hubs including Denver and Salt Lake City. Gillette also offers additional services for building supplies and equipment to satisfy nearly all the needs on the Ranch. This is another watershed that’s part of the great land “where the rivers run north” that has been so coveted for over 130 years of ranching, but even prior to that when it was inhabited by the Plains Indians. The soils and the grasses have always provided excellent feed for the livestock and wildlife, but additionally, it’s the overall combination of water, soils and climate that has made this area such a great place to live.
Climate
The climate around the Buffalo/Sheridan area is one of the most “live-able” climates in Wyoming with pleasant summers and moderate winters. Perhaps it’s the proximity to the 45th parallel along with the positioning next to the Big Horn Mountains and the lower altitude, but the Big Horn Mountain foothills have always been one of the most desirable places to live for those who have experienced it. Whatever the reason, it’s hard to argue that this area doesn’t have the greenest and most pleasant climates.
