Montana Cattle & Hunting Ranch

Cow Elk

This is Big Sky Country at its best and an opportunity to own a scenic ranch in the highly coveted area of Southeast Montana, known for producing reputation cattle herds, huge mule deer and record setting bull elk. With abundant, rich and hardy grass, plus scenic ponderosa pines, juniper and sage, it makes the perfect habitat for native wildlife and also for cattle.

Like most of the ranches in the area, the Parker Ranch is a multigenerational family ranch. The family acquired it around 1945 from the Gaskins, who are believed to have homesteaded it. So understandably, it is unusual when ranches in this coveted area come on the market, but it does present a great opportunity for the discriminating buyer.

The Parker Ranch is surrounded by large working ranches, so privacy is ensured. It has no livable improvements but has many beautiful places to build. The ranch is currently leased for grazing and is in great shape. Only about 40 minutes to downtown Sheridan Wyoming, or 2 hours to Billings Montana, access is easy and convenient.

Recreation & Hunting

Antelope

Big game hunting is at its finest on the Parker Ranch. The configuration of the deeded land relative to the very small amount of public land creates extreme privacy and exclusivity. Plus, with plenty of cover, good water and well managed grass, wildlife of all kinds love it here.

In 2016 a world record class 430 0/8 elk was taken by archery nearby in Powder River County and reportedly, a 440 class was taken off a neighboring ranch several years ago. In short, 400+ class elk are not uncommon for this area. Like the large, trophy caliber elk, mule deer are as well. In addition to elk and deer, the ranch supports healthy populations of pronghorn antelope, upland and wetland bird species, as well as black bear and other animals.

Montana FWP designate this area as Deer/Elk Hunt Area #704. The ranch has never been used for commercial hunting purposes. For the outdoor enthusiast, the ranch is the perfect retreat for camping, hiking, horseback riding, ATVs or bike riding; or even for arrowhead hunting; bird and nature watching, listening to peace and calm. This is your opportunity to explore and discover a little bit of Big Sky paradise.

General Operation

Yearlings

Throughout this ranch’s history to the present day, it has been used as a working cattle ranch for pairs and/or yearlings. The ranch is currently leased to a neighbor who manages the grass and its well-being with a rotational grazing program. It is divided into 14 pastures using permanent electric and barb wire fence. About 4 miles of pipeline delivers water throughout most of the ranch for year-round water via black poly pipe and multiple tanks. The pipeline is aided by a 12000± gallon storage tank. 3 water wells, multiple reservoirs and some springs provide additional water and wildlife habitat.

Year round carrying capacity is estimated at 60 AUs. The ranch is leased until May 1, 2021 for grazing.
