Bighorn Mountain Foothill Ranch

close proximity to lake desmet in wyoming

Looking East to Lake DeSmet

Nestled in the shadow of the Bighorn Mountains is perhaps one of the most private ranches to be found anywhere along this coveted foothill area. The N. Fork Shell Creek Ranch is completely surrounded by public land with no public roads anywhere to be seen. If the serenity of peace and quiet, coupled with the beauty of the surrounding countryside and beautiful Bighorn Mountains sounds nice we invite you to take a closer look at the N. Fork. Currently operated as a small scale grass ranch, but also used for big game hunting and other recreational activities. We invite you to get better acquainted with the property by taking a look at pictures and explore the property by watching the aerial video coverage (coming soon). Better yet, plan to take an on-site tour of the property.

Ranch Operations

N. Fork is currently used as a grazing operation for about 90 cows. It is supported by about 1,120 acres of State land as well as a 90 AUM USFS summer grazing allotment in the Bighorn Mountains. The allotment is known as the Willow Park grazing allotment and includes a cow camp with a cabin. Cattle are trailed there in mid summer from the range below where they then spend the duration of the summer grazing on nutritious mountain grasses. (Please note: The USFS lease cannot be assigned, but the Seller will agree to relinquish their rights in it.) For the balance of the year and depending on the type of operation one would like to have, the cattle can be seasonally grazed on the State and deeded land.

Recreation

The deeded land of the N. Fork serves as the perfect base of operations for anyone wanting their own private hunting land where avid sportsmen have direct access to literally tens of thousands of acres of public land for whatever is permissible to do on them. Major species include elk (hunt area 36); mule deer (hunt area 27); antelope (hunt area 102).

Improvements

The N. Fork Ranch is a blank canvas with numerous great building sites for anyone seeking to build their dream home.

It has all the essential services one might need, such as a modern hospital and clinic, physical therapy, grocery stores, a fantastic sporting goods store, The Sports Lure, banks, AG supply stores, a movie theatre, fine dining, Summer night rodeos, golf, and an excellent K-12 school system. Buffalo also has Johnson County Airport, which is capable of handling small jets. The Bighorn National Forest is only 15 minutes away.

The charming community of Sheridan, WY has most amenities and conveniences, including an FBO and a commercial airport with United Airlines jet service to Denver, as well as world-class golf, dining, medical facilities, first-rate schools (rated among the best in the nation) and shopping in Sheridan’s historic downtown. Furthermore, and more distinctly, Sheridan is home to the annual WYO Rodeo, world-class polo, Brinton Museum, Don King Days and many other uniquely “Sheridan lifestyle” events that are sure to please everyone. For further shopping and air service, one can find it in Billings, or Casper, each about two hours away. Furthermore, the Big Horn Mountains are only 30 minutes to the west, where you’ll find all the outdoor recreation you can imagine. World class fly fishing is all around the area from the North Platt River near Casper to the Bighorn River of Montana, and everything in between.

Gillette, Wyoming, east of the Ranch on Interstate 90 has commercial air service with connecting flights to several major hubs including Denver and Salt Lake City. Gillette also offers additional services for building supplies and equipment to satisfy nearly all the needs on the Ranch. This is another watershed that’s part of the great land “where the rivers run north” that has been so coveted for over 130 years of ranching, but even prior to that when it was inhabited by the Plains Indians. The soils and the grasses have always provided excellent feed for the livestock and wildlife, but additionally, it’s the overall combination of water, soils and climate that has made this area such a great place to live.

Climate

The climate around the Buffalo/Sheridan area is one of the most “live-able” climates in Wyoming with pleasant summers and moderate winters. Perhaps it’s the proximity to the 45th parallel along with the positioning next to the Big Horn Mountains and the lower altitude, but the Big Horn Mountain foothills have always been one of the most desirable places to live for those who have experienced it. Whatever the reason, it’s hard to argue that this area doesn’t have the greenest and most pleasant climates.
